HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Hey peeps!

Well I hope you all had a great Christmas!!  I sure did because I got to talk to the best family on earth... otherwise known as the SQUIRE FAMILY! And with my Grandpa Serna and adopted big brother, Tyler too... so yeah. My life is preeety good.

- BARBARA GOT BAPTIZED ON SATURDAY!! WAHOO!!! It was so great. She already has a friend from school who is Mormon and he was able to come to the baptism and the confirmation yesterday, and she was super happy!! We went to pick her up for church yesterday and she came out in a SKIRT! I about passed out. We didn't say anything about it because not everyone has skirts and not a lot of people have the money to buy them, and if they do, there's not any that are modest. BUT! Her MOM had one and said, "you should start going to church in a skirt." WOO! We were two happy missionaries yesterday!! We found out that Natalia really likes the Mormon church, but it's hard for her to get up and go on Sundays. Her marido, boyfriend, father of her children, whatever, is not the best person and doesn't want to get married, so there´s not much we can do about it. But we're hoping to baptize Lautaro and if we do, I KNOW that one day she will be a member!! This is one of the circumstances that I've had to patient and ´wait on the Lord´ and trust in HIS timing, and not mine. But I have faith that she will one day be baptized.

- So I forgot to say what Christmas Eve is like here in Argentina. At midnight, they set off fireworks ALL OVER and it's like a war zone with all of these explosions (illegal fireworks for sure). Then they open presents and go around to their neighbors and eat and chat until like 5 in the morning. They also eat a lot of fruit salad. I can't tell you how many bowls I've had since Monday. We'll be going to a member's house tonight to eat some more and say, "HAPPY NEW YEAR!"  Hna Gomez and I bought some bubbly and we'll be toasting to the New Year solas (**alone) tonight since Vawdrey and her comp moved.

-  On Thursday, we were finishing up the day and it started POURING!! I didn't have my umbrella and Gomez didn't have a hood so we were like "WHATEVER!" We got soaked in a matter of 5 minutes walking home, so we ran in the rain, jumped in puddles and played on the seesaw in a park for a bit. The pic below is the after effects. Fun times!!

- On Friday, we had the end of year dinner with the two wards. It was SO FUN! There was so much food and the youth (including my converts Tatiana and Erika) danced Argentine folklore in traditional dress and it was so great!!!! I love all of the traditional music and dances of Argentina. I was talking to Elder Gravelle and we were like, "what does the U.S. have in terms of traditional dances? The line dance? cotton eyed joe? The chicken dance?" Ha ha. Sad. They played some great music and Gomez and I were having a hard time not dancing. We may have done the sprinkler a few times when no one was looking... my friends know I can't dance.... ha ha. Tatiana and Erika are doing so well and fit right in with the members. They love them so much and are just part of the big family. That makes me SO HAPPY as a missionary. There needs to be a good hand off from missionaries to members, since we're not going to be here forever, they need to have the support system. Erika is now trying to save up to go to EFY in February and I KNOW that will be a great experience for her and a testimony builder.

-To finish, I started reading the Book of Mormon again in Spanish. I LOVED this verse in 2 NEFI 4:34, 35 34 O Lord, I have atrusted in thee, and I will btrust in thee forever. I will not put my ctrust in the arm of flesh; for I know that cursed is he that putteth his dtrust in the arm of flesh. Yea, cursed is he that putteth his trust in man or maketh flesh his arm.
35 Yea, I know that God will give aliberally to him that asketh. Yea, my God will give me, if I bask cnot amiss; therefore I will lift up my voice unto thee; yea, I will cry unto thee, my God, the drockof my erighteousness. Behold, my voice shall forever ascend up unto thee, my rock and mine everlasting God. Amen.
I love the psalms of nefi!

Shoutouts: ANNA! I got your email. I LOVE YOU! And thanks for sending pics of little Evelyn.
KELSEY MEGAN.... COOK! YOU ARE A MARRIED LADY!!! I want pictures dang it!

Hey, I love y´all!
Have a Happy New Year!

Nickel Sized Hail

Hello People!
Ok, well another week has come and gone and here I am in this smelly game den again with smelly preteen boys playing video games once again. My how time flies.

- So Hermana Carson and Vawdrey are with us once again!! Turns out their neighbor is pretty crazy and yells at them a lot!  I know, I've witnessed it.  She's not all there.... so they're working on moving to another apartment. In the meantime... it's just like old times. WOOO I'm super happy!!!!!

- On Thursday, it rained SO HARD. We were doing weekly planning in the house and it was just SO HOT. Like 95 degrees. So hot, that the power went out. No more sticking my head in the freezer... !!! We were stuck in the house until about 5pm because a guy was putting in more enchufes... plugs. Wait. Is it plugs? I think so... anyway! So he was in and out all day getting stuff,  so we couldn't leave. When we finally did, it had just started raining. By the time we got halfway to our cita, it was POURING super hard. Hna Batista doesn't have an umbrella so we were using mine. We were literally walking in a muddy river. Then it started to hail nickel sized hail thingies. We were walking huddled under the umbrella and Hna Batista was freaking out! Hermana! This is dangerous! Cover your face! And I was just laughing my head off. Saying THIS IS MY LIFE! I´M PROSELYTING IN ARGENTINA IN A HAIL STORM! IS THIS REAL LIFE??? As you can see, I thought it was quite hilarious. We made it to our cita, soaking wet with red marks on our arms, only to have our district leader call us 10 minutes later saying that we need to go back home. Darn! So we did, soaked and muddy. Well, we're alive.

The rain brought a swarm of mosquitoes. I can put on all the protector that I want but they still get me. The mosquitoes have been so bad that trucks have been passing through the streets fumigating. It´s quite the adventure contacting when once you stop moving, 10000 mosquitoes start landing on you. On Saturday night, we were talking to this man on his porch and when I wasn't teaching or testifying, my eye was out for mosquitoes. My companion was testifying with all her heart and I seriously was slapping myself all over, then THREE landed on my companion's arm, so being the great companion that I am, I slapped them dead. Well, the man started laughing, and so did my companion... and I just stood there feeling dumb. Spirit= gone. BUT, this man has interest... his name is Luis.

- We had a zone conference this week, just a mini one... an emergency one because our numbers have been so low right now  in the mission. It's pretty sad but everyone has been pretty desanimado(**discouraged), including me. We haven't been finding people who want to progress, our investigators are all becoming flojos(**lazy) and it has just been really frustrating. We talked about how we need to be exactly obedient and work a lot harder. I took the info to heart and we were able to find double the investigators that we usually do. We were more focused and unified. We found an x Jehovah's Witness who has a LOT of promise, as well as people who have already been to church a few times that weren't in the area book. We also got a text from Gabriella that destroyed me. She and her very Catholic husband had problems and he doesn't want her to meet with us any more. My heart literally broke. It's so sad when things like this happen and there´s not much I can do about it,  but pray. But I´m thankful for my companion, who is seriously amazing and has so much faith and animo(*encouragement). She doesn't need to be trained!
- Well, after my soul felt like it was literally destroyed and I wanted to shout to the heavens "how long are you going to try my faith??" I found some really great scriptures that comforted me this week. Funny how that happens. First one is in Alma 26: 27-28 "27 Now when our hearts were depressed, and we were about to turn back, behold, the Lord comforted us, and said: Go amongst thy brethren, the Lamanites, and bear with patience thine afflictions, and I will give unto you success. 28 And now behold, we have come, and been forth amongst them; and we have been patient in our sufferings, and we have suffered every privation; yea, we have traveled from house to house, relying upon the mercies of the world—not upon the mercies of the world alone but upon the mercies of God." THIS IS ME!!  The Lord is telling me to be patient in my afflictions, then he will bless me with success. Next: D y C 31 "1 Thomas (Cydnee) , my son(daughter), blessed are you because of your faith in my work.
2 Behold, you have had many afflictions because of your family; nevertheless, I will bless you and your family, yea, your little ones; and the day cometh that they will believe and know the truth and be one with you in my church. 3 Lift up your heart and rejoice, for the hour of your mission is come; and your tongue shall be loosed, and you shall declare glad tidings of great joy unto this generation.4 You shall declare the things which have been revealed to my servant, Joseph Smith, Jun. You shall begin to preach from this time forth, yea, to reap in the field which is white already to be burned. 5 Therefore, athrust in your sickle with all your soul, and your sins are forgiven you, and you shall be laden with sheaves upon your back, for the laborer is worthy of his hire. Wherefore, your family shall live. 6 Behold, verily I say unto you, go from them only for a little time, and declare my word, and I will prepare a place for them. 7 Yea, I will open the hearts of the people, and they will receive you. And I will establish a church by your hand;8 And you shall strengthen them and prepare them against the time when they shall be gathered. 9 Be patient in afflictions, revile not against those that revile. Govern your house in meekness, and be steadfast.11 Go your way whithersoever I will, and it shall be given you by the Comforter what you shall do and whither you shall go.12 Pray always, lest you enter into temptation and lose your reward. 13 Be faithful unto the end, and lo, I am with you. These words are not of man nor of men, but of me, even Jesus Christ, your Redeemer, by the will of the Father. Amen." There it is again. . Be patient in thine afflictions. I love the promise the Lord gives... that He will open the heart of the people here in Argentina for me. I know if I do my part, He will do the rest.
-Shoutouts: OK Tyler and Ashley, I was showing a pic of Lucas to my roomies and they said he looks like Jack from The Incredibles. IT'S TRUE!! Love it!
Happy birthday to Julie and Tia Alice! Hope you have great days this week!
Listen everyone. I LOVE YOU ALL DEARLY. Thank you for your love and support. Don't get too cold this winter :) hee hee hee..

The Marathon of the Lord

Hey people!

Well, it's another rainy day here in Bahia. I swear, it ALWAYS rains on pday. BOO! But I got to take a nap for a WHOLE HOUR. Oh my. It was heaven. And this week we will end the transfer! What the!? I can't believe it's already over. Time is flying.

- So yesterday was Mother's Day here in Argentina. We handmade cards for the hermanas in the ward complete with glitter (UNICORNS AND GLITTER!!!) and they LOVED it! We didn't get into anyone's house... "Chicas tengo gente...."(**girls, I have people here) so we delivered our cards to menos activos(**less actives) and other hermanas in the ward. Sweet Hermana Cortez would have spent the day alone since her kids live in Buenos Aires and Spain, so we dropped by to see her too. It was a great day. I loved it.

- Saturday we had a great ward activity. We ate empanadas and chorizos and played games. There wasn't much I could do in a skirt, but I DID win the Potato On a Spoon Race against the hermanas in the ward. We couldn't run, but I definitely am the tallest of all the women, so I smoked everyone!!!!!  One of our menos activos came, Miriam, and brought her daughter-in-law, Florencia. We tried teaching her before, but she was like "no, I want to stay in my church." But now she's interested! She wants to change some things in her life, so we are super excited to work with her! It was such a fun way for everyone to just chill out and get to know each other better. We definitely need to have more activities to unite the ward more!!
- SO. Earlier this week, it was really warm. Like WAY warm. Like time to ditch the tights warm. So for 3 days I did... It felt SO WEIRD! First time in almost 9 months that I haven't worn tights. My legs are SO WHITE!  Who needs street lamps at night??!!  My legs will light the way home!!!!! Haha, in time I'll be a little morochita. (***tan country girl)  It's already been pretty warm, and all the Elders are dreading summer. We'll see!

- We passed by a members house this week and their little boy was outside. He's six, but has a growing disorder so he looks like he's 3 or 4 with the tiniest bones. He's so cute and I just want to squeeze him! So anyway, we waved to him and later his mom told us that he said "Las Elderas passed by and they waved to me! They saw me!" It was so cute. It's so hilarious when people call us "Las Elderas" or "Las Elderes". I'm always like, ohhhhhkay, we're hermanas... but whatever. It's a little endearing.

- HOPEFULLY we'll be moving to a new house this week. They called us last Monday and told us we'd be moving on Tuesday, so we packed EVERYTHING, but the next day they said that they were fixing up the house! NOOOO!!!!!! So EVERYTHING is all packed in space bags and I have TWO skirts that I've been wearing. Fun times. I'm sure going to miss my Vawdrey. :-(

- So, I read my weekly pday letter from Aunt Lori last week, and she shared two excerpts from Dave and Greg's emails from when they were serving. I LOVED what you two said, it really has helped me. They compared the mission to a marathon, and the longer I serve, the more I realize it really is like a race... an 18 month race. This is what Dave said, (direct quote because I cannot do it justice by summarizing) "Now is my time to RUN full out. When a runner finishes a race, how much should he have left? The answer is NOTHING. If it is anything else, he didn't run the race right. I want to run the race correctly by expending myself fully so as not to have any regrets or wonder what might have been. And oh yes, I will finish despite how tired I may have been throughout the 2 year marathon-- and as I hit the crimson tape, both my index fingers will be extended to the sky. But not to glory in my own achievements, but more in the attitude of praising my Heavenly Father for sustaining me when the track got rough. I'm not an idiot--I know it is going to be difficult. But I also know of the promise made by my older brother Jesus when He said, 'I never said it would be easy, I only said it could be worth it'. Yes, I will stumble and probably even fall flat on my face just at about the point I reach maximum speed... so what? At this point the Savior will come and put me on my feet, brush me off, clean up my cuts and help get me started again. He'll whisper words of sympathy in my ear saying, 'Kinda stings, doesn't it? I know how you feel--but you must not let it slow you down. Know that I am with you the entire way and will carry you across the finish line upon my back if you require it'. I have already felt the Savior carrying me throughout this race-- I know I am accomplishing things beyond my efforts and abilities with the Lord's help. I am doing the Lord's work, and so it is in His best interest that I succeed. I have the faith that my Savior will not quit 'saving' me-- He IS my Savior, not WAS my Savior. Despite how tired, sick and weak I may become, the Lord will lift me up and I CANNOT fail in the Lord's work." Wow. I can honestly say that I have never felt so tired and worn out in my entire life. But I know that my Savior is sustaining me. He is helping me keep going, amidst the blisters, rejections, sweat, cold, and rain. This is the hardest thing I have ever done in my life, but I will endure it with the help of my Savior. It is also the most rewarding thing. We don't have a bunch of success, but when we do have success, even a small miracle, all the tough times make me appreciate it more. I'm trying to gather up my energy and run full out, run until I have nothing left, until I cross that finish line and get on that plane home, and feel the Lord accept the work that I did here in the Bahia Blanca Mission... I want to feel Him say," Well done, thou good and faithful servant, thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things, enter now into the joy of thy Lord." I want to leave the field with no regrets, leave knowing that I accomplished the work the Lord called me to do.

Shoutouts: Cousin Heather, THANK YOU for the email and the updates on the real world!! Tio Hector, thanks for the email! Glad things are well.
Happy birthday this week tooooo Amberly, Jonathan and Myrinda!! Hope you all have great days!!

Still lost...........

Hey you crazy people,

How's it going? I can't believe school starts sooooooo soon. Have fun with THAT!

-Well, another week has come and gone and I'm just sitting here like "whaaat??"  I'm sitting here in this dark game den... because our normal spot is closed for another holiday. Flippen Argentines. Always celebrating something. ANYWAY. I usually am a lot more prepared with a list of things to write and a spiritual thought and such, but it's just been another crazy week. We still feel pretty lost still and we're still trying to get to know our area.

- There are like 3 widows in the ward who are just SO excited to have Hermanas. The Elders can't come eat with them, and they are just so lonely. I feel so bad! We try and go visit them and stuff but they sure can talk your ear off. They just need someone to talk to! But for the most part, the members here are great! There's a lot of gossip and talking bad about the leaders. That upsets me. They don't have super great ward attendance, but at least they have enough to have teachers and such. No teaching for me this transfer! There is the CUTEST lady in the ward whose name is Rosa, she's a little bit menos activo,(**less active) but SO SWEET! She comes to my elbow and has no teeth. I love her! We had lunch with the chorister, who has purple hair, and I found cat hair in my jello... yup.
-Ok, with lunches. We have lunches scheduled EVERY FREAKING DAY. My word. We had to say no for Mondays (pday) and Thurs (planning) but there is like fights for lunches, because there are four of us. It even got a little heated in Relief Society and I got super uncomfortable! They think they need to make this huge feast, but really, the Hermanas don't eat as much as the Elders!! I've been better at just saying "I can't eat that much," and even if they are offended I'm just like "listen. I don't want to blow up like a balloon here!! The Elders can take care of that.!!"..goodness... they each had 3 plates on Sunday!! Crazies!! We had lunch with the former bishop and his family and it was my FAVORITE!!!  So delicious and they were so funny. Way sarcastic and just fun to be with. They had asked about the weird foods we had eaten and asked if we'd had cow head yet... with the brains and eyes and everything. Ummm YUCK!! No! Hopefully that NEVER happens!! Then they said that cow testicles are pretty common to eat. UM WHAT!?? NO WAY JOSE!!! ALL of our faces were like "uhhhhh." Then they went off on cow testicles are tasty and I was dying of laughter AND embarrassment. Real nice conversation for Elders and Hermanas, eh? NOT!

- So Saturday we had a mission conference and Elder Viñas of the Quorum of 70 came. We all thought it would be a bajar de caña on our hineys, (lower the cane-or chastisement) cuz that is what mostly happens when General Authorities come. But it was actually so great!!! He gave us some great council and he left one hour for answering questions. Every question he went to the scriptures. One day I hope to be like that! He was so great!! I also LOVE LOVE LOVE being with other missionaries!! It's such a strength to me. I even got to see Hna Linco! LOVE HER! (mom she says thanks for her lotion and things). Conferences always get me pumped up for missionary work!!!!!
- Yesterday, we were walking to find our investigator, Rosalia to bring her to church. I had brought my umbrella because it's been raining for the past 3 days. Lo and behold it was warm that day. So I had my umbrella and I was like "why the heck did I bring this?" Right as I said that, 4, yes FOUR dogs came running after us and Hna Israelsen shouted "USE IT!!!"  And so I started swinging!!!! We escaped! Dumb dogs. They are so much worse here!!!  And Rosalia... she's 78 I think and just a spit fire!!  SO CUTE! She comes to my shoulder and weighs like 80 pounds. She didn't make it to church, and she might move to the campo to work. PRAY THAT SHE WONT SO SHE CAN GET BAPTIZED!!

- Rain is the WORST to do missionary work. You'd think people would be like "poor things, come inside." BUT NO. It's just another excuse. They say, "come back when it's not raining!" UM WHAT DOES IT MATTER TO YOU! YOU'RE INSIDE! LET US IN YOUR HOUSE SO WE CAN HELP YOU ACHIEVE ETERNAL LIFE! Sheesh. So we just walk around all day and get wet! And I swear cars think it's funny to spray us with water!! So I just give em the thumbs up when it happens! Yep, thanks so much!  Not like we weren't soaked anyway right??

Villa Mitre is ok... not as receptive as Pringles. People are pretty much hard as rocks. We have to count a lot on the members to get us references and help us get into houses. I'm pretty tired of people waggling their fingers at me and talking to me from their windows. But what can ya do. You just keep going, and keep looking for the elect. The ones who are ready to change.

Mom, don't freak out. We're safe. We only work in the semi sketchy places during the day, and the nicer barrios at night. The Elders take the sketchy villas and work there. Every area has its dangers. PRAY WE'LL START SEEING SOME SUCCESS. We're looking hard for the Lord's elect.

-Shoutouts! TAY AND KRIS! Got your dearelders! Love ya! KELS! I got your letter. I flippen DIED at your news bit! Haha didn't see that coming!!! HADDY! AHHH I loved your dearelder. MISS YOU! Have a great week everyone! Work hard and pray harder!!

Con carino,
Hermana Squire

Padres, Vaughan is from S. Carolina and we're gonna be BFFs. She might come home early for her foot. Pray for her. DAD YOUR MUSTANG!!!! SO COOL!!!! Don't worry about me. Doing well.
love yah. still tracking miles, 200 last transfer...

Milagros!! (Miracles)

HOLA QUERIDA FAMILIA Y AMIGOS!

Oh my goodness, this week was GREAT! Wet, but so amazing. Miracles I tell ya, MIRACLES! Where do I even start?!

-We had 3 investigators in church yesterday. THREE! We went from 0 for the past 4 weeks to 3! Woo! So, Julieta came alone. She ALWAYS comes with Enrique. She told us that she called him that morning and he was all wishy washy about going to church and she told him that she's tired of waiting for him to change, so she's going to get baptized anyway. WHAT!!! AHHH! She asked us, "So when can we do it?" WELL, THIS SATURDAY OF COURSE!! WOOO! POR FIN! Ah, I'm so excited for her! We've been praying for this for a month! Ahhh what a miracle, no?
- We called Belén at 9:30 (when church starts) and she had been crying. Her uncle had passed away that morning (good timing on phone call, right?). We told her that if she felt up to it, she could come late. SHE CAME! She came in just after sacrament with puffy, red eyes and with Jorge. OH MY GOSH. She participated so much in the class for the jovenes (youth) and stayed the WHOLE TIME. Oh my gosh. I LOVE HER! We only have diezmo y ofrendas (tithes & offerings) left to teach her. We taught Word of Wisdom and Chastity with her WHOLE DANG FAMILY there. Awkward. But she´s working on quitting smoking. She is truly the golden investigator.
- How we found Belén is totally the Lord´s doing. We met Analia after fasting, then met her brother Filipe. We visited with Filipe and his señora, Yanina (they aren't progressing) and then we were knocking at their house one day and Jorge was there (menos activo and novio *boyfriend* of Belén). We visited Jorge at his house and that's where we met Belén. Belén is Yanina´s SISTER! What in the world...??? all this work and family connections and we find Belén. Our little gem of an investigator. I hope that made sense.
- Rosio (little CUTIE PIE in the picture) came with her family too! La familia Varela is menos activo, but are working with them. They are the greatest and I LOVE THEM. Gabby is working on quitting drinking so he can baptize his daughter. Rosio is SERIOUSLY the cutest girl you will ever meet. I want to squeeze her all the time.
- Lesson learned this week: Check boots for spiders before you put them on, or you might find one smashed against your tights that night.
- We had just finished teaching an investigator about the resurrection and how we would have perfected bodies. She told us she was happy for that because she had a ´problem´ that none of her siblings had. Then what happened, you ask? SHE HAD A SEIZURE, right then! Oh my word! Hna Israelsen was freaking out, and I don't know why, but I was just so calm. I just helped her stabilize and it passed. Freaky, but what timing, right? Vomit and seizures... what´s next?
- It rained SO HARD on Wednesday. We seriously had a river on our street. A RIVER. It probably would have been easier to canoe to our lessons. This is when we found out our roof leaks. Luckily Hermana Israelsen and I came back to grab something and saw it was leaking so we were able to put pots and pans out everywhere. Oh, the mission.
Shoutouts: HADDY MAE. Happy dang birthday. Hope it was great. Thought about you tons yesterday. And... soggy waffle... hope you got that. AND I WOULD LOVE TO BE YOUR HONORARY BRIDESMAID!! Aw, you're gonna make me cry. YOUR DRESS IS THE DANG CUTEST! SO YOU. Bah, I love you. Paige- The Abundant Life- Elder Wirthlin. Read and Report. I love you dear. KELSEY FARR! HAPPY BIRTHDAY ON SUNDAY!!! 21 you old lady. TO ALL MY DEAR FRIENDS!  We just got a  brand new rule sheet from the zone leaders! We can't open emails from friends!! Aunts, uncles, cousins (cousin´s wives), brother and sister in-law and nephew (Tyler and Ashley), and grandparents are ok... but the rest of you,  :-( So sad! Dearelders for you! They take longer, I know, but if you have something EXCITING to say like you're getting married! You're having a baby! etc., shoot an email to my mama (jssquire@msn.com) and she'll inform me. I'm so sorry, but I have to be obedient!! So dearelder.com, o.k.?

I LOVE YOU ALL SO MUCH! Bah, being a missionary is the best. It makes you so dang happy. It's really so true, when you are serving others with your whole self, it makes you so happy. I hope all of you have felt or will feel this happiness.

BESOS!
Hermana Squire (Hermana SQUARE... it's a new one. People are like, OH! Like the shape in English, right? Sure. Close enough)

Pic 1: The flood in front of our house
Pic 2: Rosio. Our 9 year old investigator. Her dad (menos activo) is the bald man in the back. I LOVE ROSIO! Isn´t she the most adorable girl?!

***NO PICTURES CAME. Bummer! (this is Janie)
